Match Day reveals 80% of LSU Health New Orleans medical graduates staying in Louisiana will enter LSU Health residency programs

172 students participated in the National Resident Match Program this year

NEW ORLEANS – This past Friday, 172 LSU Health New Orleans graduating medical students gathered at Audubon Team Room to discover the results of the annual National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Match Day results revealed that 80 graduates will remain in Louisiana for their residency, 80% of whom will enter an LSU Health program.

Established in 1952, the NRMP is the primary system that matches applicants to residency programs with available positions at U.S. teaching hospitals and academic health centers. 35,984 students across the country found out on the same date and time where they matched and where they will spend their years of residency training, starting this July.

“This is a day that our senior students have anticipated for years, and the Match process has become increasingly competitive,” says Dr. Richard DiCarlo, interim dean at the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine. “LSU Health New Orleans medical graduates are in demand and Louisiana has one of the highest retention rates in the country for students in public medical school.”

LSU Health New Orleans graduates who matched residency programs in other states will be attending some of the most prestigious out-of-state programs like Johns Hopkins, Duke, the Cleveland Clinic, Emory, Vanderbilt, Cornell and the University of Alabama-Birmingham, among others.

“The quality of our training programs is evidenced by our graduates’ high confidence in them,” notes Dr. Steve Nelson, Chancellor of LSU Health New Orleans. “Eighty percent of our graduates who will enter residency in Louisiana chose LSU Health programs. LSU Health New Orleans continues to supply the physicians who take care of the people of Louisiana.”

Of the 73 accredited residency and fellowship programs under LSU Health New Orleans, 35 participated in the Main NRMP Match. These residency programs in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and Bogalusa filled all their available positions and will welcome 224 new residents in June.

Alicia Vial

Alicia Vial is a New Orleans native with more than a decade of experience elevating client stories and leading crisis response. As the senior director of strategy, Alicia acts as a leader within the Gambel Communications team ensuring each agency team member is positioned to deliver strategic public relations services that meet the highest standards of the industry. During her nearly eight-year tenure, Alicia oversaw numerous crises, served on national communication taskforces, oversaw all aspects of internal and external relations and worked alongside the development department to raise critical funding. Prior to that, she worked in the fast-paced New Orleans hospitality industry focusing on digital public relations for multiple hotels.

Alicia is a member of the Public Relations Association of Louisiana (PRAL), Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF), a board member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) New Orleans Chapter and a member of the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute. An accredited public relations practitioner (APR), Alicia is also certified in crisis communications, organizational leadership, content marketing and social media.

A well respected and trusted public relations practitioner, Alicia has been recognized by SPRF as a ‘Senior Practitioner of the Year’. Dubbed early on in her career as one to watch, she also received the ‘Rising Star’ award by PRAL and was profiled in St. Charles Avenue Magazine as part of their Young Bloods series. Most recently, she was recognized at PRSA’s annual Fleurish Awards and received four Awards of Excellence for her work along with the ‘Plate Spinner’ award for her efforts on the board of directors for the chapter.

An LSU graduate, Alicia received a bachelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in public relations and minors in business administration and leadership development. She is a frequent speaker and presenter on public relations topics, most recently presenting at the Jefferson Economic Development Commission and SPRF annual conference.
