Why Words Matter

Today’s connected reality guarantees information overload that leads to listeners routinely filtering out anything that doesn’t make sense or wastes their time. It can be a conversation that appears to be going nowhere, a newsletter filled with complicated jargon or reading between the lines of passive-aggressive discussion that can’t or simply won’t address complicated issues.

Words have the power to uplift and inspire but they can also offend and provoke. In a world where communication forms the core of our relationships, our language has to evolve at the same pace as our culture.

With that, I’d like to introduce you to the concept of ‘smart talk.’ I first heard about smart talk during a recent conference where I met an author named Melissa Vela-Williamson. She defines smart talk as real, honest, helpful conversations with an intelligent exchange of information and stories. Sounds simple, but if we’re honest with ourselves, much of our daily discourse misses that mark. We don’t aim for deeper conversations and connection with others.

The next time you write an email, reply to a text or engage in conversation with someone, be highly conscious of the words you choose. Aim to communicate clearly and concisely. If you put this concept into action, it will transform the way you communicate and help you have deeper conversations that lead to more meaningful connections.
